Like competitor Best Buy, hhgregg specializes in the sale of appliances, electronics, and furniture. So, the company also competes with Sears in some product areas. The company began as Gregg Appliances in 1955 in Indianapolis, Indiana, and later changed its name to H. H. Gregg and then to hhgregg.
Founder Henry Harold (Hine) Gregg was a WWII Navy veteran who was living in Sheridan, Indiana and working as manager of the Biddle Screw Products store. Then, the Gibson Company, which was located in Indianapolis, decided to send Fansy Navie Foster, their home service director, down south to Biddle to improve sales by demonstrating Gibson's appliances to the public while also showing retailers how to operate and sell them. In due time, Harold quit his job as store manager, followed Fansy north to Indianapolis, and took a job selling appliances for A.C. Zickler. Harold eventually succeeded in both marrying Fansy and becoming Zickler's store manager. On April 15, 1955, two years after they were married, Fansy and Harold took $3,000 of their savings to purchase Zickler's 800 square-foot store. Zickler continued to operate a plumbing business out of the back of the store, while the Gregg's sold refrigerators, washers and dryers, and grills out of the storefront. Later, they added black and white televisions, and when the new-fangled color televisions came onto the market, they added those, as well.
From the single 800 square foot store in Indianapolis, hhgregg now has over 200 stores in 20 states. The new stores now range in size from 25,000 square feet to 30,000 square feet -- 30 of the original store could fit in one of the new ones with room to spare. While the inventory varies somewhat from store to store, the new stores now care around 350 different models of major appliances. The stores continue to sell consumer electronics, and hhgregg inventory continues to keep up with customer demand and the marketplace. The stores now offer computers and wireless products, fitness equipment, and furniture and mattresses.
