Nolo was the brainchild of two legal aides in the 70s, who became frustrated that so many working people could not qualify for free legal aid. At the time, the poor could get free legal advice and the wealthy could afford legal advice. Everyone else had to pay the same rates as the rich, and so they often did not take care of simple legal actions, like making a will. The stated mission of Nolo is to provide the availability of “Law for All.”
They started out by publishing how-to books on legal subjects, in plain language, that everyday consumers could understand. The company’s website illustrates how far they’ve come from being publisher and seller of easy to understand legal books. Nolo.com still sells plenty of consumer friendly legal books, but that’s just the beginning. They sell very reasonably priced legal software programs, and they offer most of their publications in print and e-book format.
Nolo makes the law approachable for all. The products they sell include software that will walk you through innumerable legal situations, using language that is understandable to the non-lawyer. Many of the programs will teach you the applicable law, provide the documents you need, help you fill out those documents and give you instructions on how to file those legal documents.
The website does conspicuously state, that in involved cases or in cases where the law may be open to interpretation, you should consult an attorney. In fact, they’ve made that easier too by providing a lawyer directory. You can look up a lawyer by location or one who specializes in the specific area of your concern. The Nolo website has a huge inventory of free information for the public. You don’t need to sign up or give out any personal data. All you have to do is look for the topic of your interest.
It’s hard to separate the selling part of the company from the educating part of the company. It is obvious, after perusing their many-paged website, that this company is committed to the greater good. Sure, they sell books and software, but the overwhelming focus remains true to the founders’ ideal. Nolo provides free books you can read and you can teach yourself how to do legal research about any number of legal issues.
You can find out everything you need to know about a specific legal questions at Nolo and how it relates to your state of residence. You can arm yourself with the information you need, in order to decide what course of action you should take. You'd be hard pressed to come up with a reason not to choose Nolo, as the source for all your legal information needs. Their YouTube video, Living Wills and Powers of Attorney explains about the basics of living wills and durable powers of attorney for health care.
Plenty of websites have jumped on the bandwagon to offer some of the same services that Nolo offers. Why wouldn’t you choose the one that started out with the intention of empowering people to help themselves? You can trust Nolo to help you make the best decision. That decision may be to purchase one or more of their books or software programs. Already reasonably priced, the discounts offered by Giving Assistant make those products even more affordable. That decision could be that your problem is too involved for you to handle alone. You may need to hire an attorney. Whatever the final answer is, you can find it at Nolo.com.
