Dollar Shave Club Review
The founders of Dollar Shave Club met at a party, where they realized they had a mutual grievance about the cost of razors and the expense of shaving. The two young men, Mark Levine and Michael Dubin, developed the idea of a monthly shave club. They'd sell memberships in the club, which in turn would ship reasonably priced razors and razor cartridges every month to members. Members in turn could choose from three razor types. The original shipment would contain a razor handle and cartridges. Subsequent monthly shipments would consist of just the cartridges, which would presumably provide one month’s worth of shaving. With aggressive fundraising and creative advertising, Dollar Shave Club was born.
In March of 2012 Dollar Shave Club posted a video on YouTube entitled, Our Blades are F***ing Great. It was the first Dollar Shave Club membership video that started it all. The video features Michael Dubin, talking about the Dollar Shave Club. The video went viral and the fledgling company received 12,000 membership orders the first weekend it was available for viewing.
The club today has more than two million members and shows no sign of slowing down. Although there are competitors, Gillette has a shave club and 800razors.com sells razors on line, no one offers the pricing or the tongue-in-cheek advertising that Dollar Shave Club does. Membership in the club comes with no contract or long-term commitment. Members can chose from three razors. The Humble Twin, which is two-bladed, and costs $1 a month for five cartridges, plus $2 shipping. The 4X, which has four blades, costs $6 a month for four cartridges with no extra shipping charge. Executive is a six-blade razor and costs $9 a month for four cartridges with no extra shipping charge. Each initial shipment comes with a compatible handle at no extra charge.
If at any time a member wants to change razors, a new compatible handle will be sent at no extra charge. If the frequency of the monthly delivery is too often or not often enough, the member just needs to contact Dollar Shave Club and it will be adjusted. The club, which has no other membership dues or commitments, can be changed or canceled at will, with no penalties. The website, www.dollarshaveclub.com, also sells a limited number of grooming toiletries including shaving butter and after shave, hair gel, hair paste, and the humorously named hygienic wipes called “One Wipe Charlies.”
Humor is one of the themes, which has set Dollar Shave Club apart from its competitors. Faced with the fairly mundane topic of shaving, the management has continued to entertain, as well as meet the needs of the shaving public. On TV and on line, Dollar Shave Club finds a way to make buying razors fun for all. Even though its advertising and products are marketed to men, 20 percent of Dollar Shave Club members are, in fact, women. Their overwhelming success hasn’t proven to be a downfall either. The club is staying true to its original plan by maintaining an A+ rating with the Better Business Bureau while continuing to grow. Dollar Shave Club was a great idea that has been translated into a practical and successful brand.
