Tom Thumb Review
Tom Thumb began when two friends, J.R. Bost and Bob Cullum, from Dallas, Tx., purchased a small local chain of stores. They were intrigued by the new concept of a “supermarket” and for the first few years worked relentlessly to improve their stores’ quality, selection, and shopping experience. Though their stores were small, they managed to compete with the large national chains. Throughout the ’50s, Bob Cullum expanded their stores by offering housewares and health and beauty products. By 1956 they had grown to 20 stores and construction of new, larger stores was ongoing. Business boomed from 1950-1966 for Tom Thumb. They purchased several chains including Simon David, Hinky Dinky, and Pantry Food Markets. The real game changer came later with the addition of Page Drugs. This new direction of combining a supermarket and drugstore in one catapulted their sales to a half a billion dollars in 1974. Over the years Tom Thumb merged with Randall’s and in 2015 became the southern division of Albertsons. The parent company now operates over 2,200 stores and employs over 265,00 people nationwide. Many companies such as Kroger and Target offer rewards programs and discounts throughout the store by becoming a member. Tom Thumb takes these programs to the next level by providing savings on fuel by shopping at Tom Thumb. It’s free and easy to sign up for your Club Card, and your membership gives you exclusive savings all over the store and when shopping online. Just present your card or enter your phone number at checkout, and your savings will be automatically deducted. While shopping, you will notice special shelf tags and signs on designated products. Reward Card members receive the advertised savings and discounts on fuel. For every dollar spent in Tom Thumb, you earn one point toward free or discounted gasoline at participating gas stations. With your membership, you can also take advantage of up to $300 in digital coupons each week. Tom Thumb’s Just for U savings are personalized to your usual shopping habits to offer you savings on the products you buy the most. Just go online and virtually clip the coupons you would like to use, and when you present your card at checkout in store or online, your clipped coupons will be deducted from your total. Over the decades since Tom Thumb began, one thing that has remained the same is the company’s focus on their customers, employees, and community. Their Junior Military Officer and Non-Commissioned Officer training programs place military officers in an accelerated leadership program. They diligently look for ways to support our country’s veterans with employment and community programs. The workforce at Tom Thumb is highly diverse and strives to employ people from all backgrounds and promote from within for employees to grow within the company. Within the community, Tom Thumb and their employees are very active in volunteerism. In 2013, Denver, Colorado endured two major disasters. 486 homes and over 14,000 acres of land were burned in the Black Forest Fire north of Colorado Springs. Employees worked tirelessly as Albertsons/Safeway provided firefighters and first responders with daily meals and water. Later in the year, severe flooding impacted Northern Colorado. Employees worked alongside the Red Cross and The Salvation Army to provide first responders and evacuees with survival supplies. The Albertsons Companies/ Safeway Foundation seeks to support causes that impact their customers’ lives and to better the lives of the people in their neighborhoods. They work alongside nonprofit organizations to provide support to programs for youth, human services, veterans, health, and the environment. Check out this video to learn more about The Albertsons and Safeway Foundation. The foundation believes that the health of the community begins with the health of their neighbors. For this reason, they provide ongoing support to medical research programs. Their support for Cancer Research helps to give more patients the opportunity to participate in cancer trials. Their support also provides care to many patients who otherwise do not have access to necessary preventative testing and treatment. For the American Heart Association, Albertsons and Tom Thumb raised over $7 million dollars and provided healthy snacks and blood pressure checks for 86,000 walkers in their annual Heart Walk. In Alaska, women in remote areas have a difficult time accessing mammogram services. The Albertsons Companies Foundation donated over $50,000 to provide a mobile mammography van. While many communities across the country have these, this is the first for Alaska. The van travels to remote areas of Alaska to provide women with mammogram services. Tom Thumb’s advocacy for their customers and neighbor’s health continues in their stores as well. The pharmacy department and wellness center offer education regarding specific health conditions, staying in shape, and eating healthy. Also, friendly pharmacists are on hand to answer any questions you may have about your medications. Manage and refill your prescriptions online and check out the vaccines available by appointment or on a walk-in basis. Tom Thumb was built with the goal to provide as much as possible for their customers in one place. This mission continues today through the quality and variety of products and services in their stores, as well as their involvement in their communities.
