Discovery Cove Review
Discovery Cove is part of the SeaWorld Parks & Entertainment family, and the level of entertainment provided by Discovery Cove rivals that of Disney and Universal Studios. Going back to 1964, you get a sense for how this whole industry was built. The San Diego SeaWorld was first opened that year by four partners. The original idea was to create an underwater restaurant. That idea turned into an entire marine zoological park sitting on 21 acres. It was an instant hit as it combined education and entertainment in one unique place.
Since that strong opening, SeaWorld has grown to have three parks. The Texas park is located in San Antonio, and the Florida one is located not far from Discovery Cove in Orlando.
Discovery Cove was opened in 2000. Here, guests can not only view but can interact with a number of sea creatures. There are thousands of tropical fish swimming around The Grand Reef, otters and marmosets splashing around in the Freshwater Oasis, and tropical birds hanging out in the trees at the Explorer's Aviary.
Admission grants you access to the park for the entire day. Meals and drinks are included at the all-inclusive resort, so you don't have to worry about anything except having a good time. Breakfast and lunch are both served at various venues, and a kid's menu is available. An upgraded drink package is an option for you to look into if you're interested in having more choices.
If you wish to spend the night, you can choose to get a hotel package. There are a few partner hotels located nearby that you can book accommodations with, and these typically have shuttle buses that can take you back and forth.
In terms of visiting the park, you can choose the resort-only package or opt to enhance your experience. The basic package includes the opportunity to snorkel among tropical fish and rays, check out sharks through a 10-foot-tall panoramic window, hand-feed exotic birds, enjoy the beaches, and float along a clear river.
If you would love to get face-to-face with a dolphin, you can get the dolphin package added on to your reservation. This includes all of the previously mentioned features in addition to a 30-minute interaction with dolphins. During this time, you'll be accompanied by a trainer and will get to wade into the water and actually touch an Atlantic bottlenose dolphin. Your experience ends with an unforgettable ride. The trainer will help you position yourself, and you'll get to hang on the dorsal fin of one of the animals as it swims around.
The highest level of package that you can buy is the "trainer for a day" package. You get to spend the entire day with a trainer leading you through the various parts of the park. Your interaction with the dolphins will be extended, you'll get to feed tropical fish in The Grand Reef, you'll get to interact with small mammals and tropical birds, and you'll get to use a digital underwater camera provided by Discovery Cove. Further, this package comes with 14 days of unlimited admission to SeaWorld, Aquatica, and Busch Gardens.
Additional add-ons can include swimming with sharks or getting a private, behind-the-scenes tour of the animals in the aviary and elsewhere.
The animal interactions are certainly exhilarating, but most things are very peaceful here. Admission is capped at 1200, unlike some of the other places that are packed with people. Every visitor to Discovery Cove gets to use fresh towels, showers and changing facilities, lockers, sunscreen, wet suits and vests, and snorkeling gear provided by the park.
If you prefer to have even more privacy, you can choose to rent a private cabana and give yourself or your group a tranquil space to relax. These cabanas have tables, chairs, chaise lounges, fresh towels, and private lockers. You'll get access to a Cabana Host who can re-stock your snacks and drinks (which are unlimited throughout the day) as well as keep things tidy and comfortable for you.
