Legal Zoom Review
Most of us have heard of Legal Zoom. A common misconception about Legal Zoom is that they‘re a company for small businesses only. While it is true that many of the services they offer can help businesses, the truth is Legal Zoom literally has something for everyone. They're a web-based firm that offers various legal forms, with easy to understand instructions, which anyone with a computer can purchase and download. They also offer more involved items and services.
The concept behind Legal Zoom is genius. The idea is to take away the mystery and expense of simple legal documents and empower regular people, by giving them the tools to become educated about various legal situations. They provide people the ability to purchase forms for multiple legal situations and let them take their simple legal transactions into their own hands. Many of the available forms are simple fill-in-the-blank affairs. It’s possible to purchase the form, fill it out, have the participating parties sign it and it becomes a binding legal document. You can do all this at the low single purchase price of the form itself.
In the past, if you wanted to rent out your house or make a small loan or even write up a simple will, you’d have to make an appointment with a lawyer, pay him by the hour and probably still have to fill the form out yourself. Legal Zoom has made taking control of your personal legal needs accessible. This holds true for the businessperson, as well as the family man. Legal Zoom lists 28 different forms under the “Starting Your Business” section and another 39 under the heading of “Running Your Business.” If you're not sure which form you need, both sections offer direction and guidance to help you determine which form suits you best. There is even a YouTube video, LegalZoom - Step by Step Guide on Starting your Business.
The website is very user friendly. It’s broken down into sub sections labeled “Starting Your Business”, “Running Your Business”, “Wills & Trusts” and “Personal & Family.” Multiple related forms are listed in each section. Under each listing for a form, Legal Zoom walks you through the procedure. For example, in the Personal & Family section, one of the options is for Name Change. They list three steps in this process. You answer a simple questionnaire, fill in and purchase the document, and then the document is mailed to you with step-by-step instructions on how to file it with the courts. All of this is at a fraction of what it would cost to see a lawyer for the same simple action.
Legal Zoom doesn't stop there. They have a legal library that consists of hundreds of free articles, covering every legal situation you can imagine. You may not know if you have a problem or a legal right to do something about a situation. You can go to Legalzoom.com, search the Knowledge Center and read everything you need to understand your options. There are useful comparison charts to help you decide which would be better for your situation, a Last Will, a Living Trust or a simple Power of Attorney.
A well-trained customer service department is happy to answer general questions, clarify instructions and make suggestions. You can also speak to a lawyer on the website, who specializes in your particular area of need. In addition to the forms subscription available on Legal Zoom, you can retain one of their attorneys, for a small monthly fee. This attorney will review and advise you on all your basic legal needs, allowing you to form a relationship of trust. The lawyer subscription plan includes several benefits, beyond the legal consultations and reviews. It's also possible to hire a lawyer for a one-time set of circumstances.
Legal Zoom has something for everyone's legal needs. If you're the owner of a small business and want to incorporate, they can tell which type of incorporation is best suited for your situation, walk you through the steps needed and provide the forms. If you want to make sure that your precious poodle will be well taken care of after you're gone, they can help you with that too. If you've kept your legal documents in a drawer and would just like someone to review them all, they can help. Take care of your family and your business needs for a fraction of the cost of a regular attorney.
