5 Things You Didn't Know About Avon
- Avon's founder, David H. McConnell, began as a traveling book salesperson. He offered perfume as a perk. Women preferred his perfume, so he switched products.
- Although located in New York, McConnell's business partner, who lived in California, suggested the name California Perfume Company because many flowers grow in California.
- Avon added jewelry to their skin care and makeup products in 1971. By 1975, Avon had become the world's largest maker of jewelry.
- Avon sells products in over 100 countries, but the U.S. is no longer their largest market. Brazil has been number one since 2010.
- Avon's Facebook and Twitter pages are great sources of inspiration and information for any woman who owns her own business, not just for Avon reps!

Like Mary Kay and BeautiControl Cosmetics, Avon began selling products through representatives, or rather through a single representative who sold books, not cosmetics. David H. McConnell was a traveling book sales rep who began offering perfume samples as a perk for women. The women, however, were more excited about his perfumes than his books, and shared them with family, friends, and neighbors. In 1886, McConnell dropped the books, founded the California Perfume Company (CPC), and began mixing fragrances in his small New York office. He hired Mrs. P. F. E. Albee as his first sales rep. His first product was the Little Dot Perfume Set, which featured five single note fragrances -- lily of the valley, white rose, hyacinth, violet, and heliotrope. Then, in 1896, he created the first sales brochure. The Avon focus on empowering women and creating a friendly, family-like business environment began with forward-thinking McConnell. The Avon name and logo were first introduced in 1929, and in 1939, the company officially changed its name to Avon. Avon became a public company in 1946, but was never listed on the New York Stock Exchange until 1964. Avon added jewelry to its product line in 1971, and by 1975, the company had become the world's largest jewelry manufacturer. In 1986, Avon became the first company to use stabilized retinol in its skin care products. The number of Avon sales reps reached one million in 1978 with over $2 billion in sales, and by 2009, Avon had more than six million sales reps.
The Avon foundation was founded in 1955, and its first grant was a single $400 scholarship. In 1992, Avon U.K. launched the Breast Cancer Crusade and began selling a Crusade pin to raise awareness about breast cancer and to raise funds for research. Avon in the U.S. adopted the Crusade in 1993, and in 1998, Avon held its first Walk to raise funds for breast cancer. Since 2003, the 220,000 participants in The Walk to End Breast Cancer have raised nearly $590 million. In 2004, Avon introduced the Speak Out Against Domestic Violence Campaign. In this Avon YouTube video titled Speak Out Against Domestic Abuse | Maria Sharapova & The Avon Foundation, Maria Sharapova, speaking for the Avon Foundation, encourages men and women to become aware of the signs of domestic violence. She makes the point that men can also be victims of partner abuse. In 2014, the Avon Foundation introduced the Justice Institute on Gender-Based Violence, and in 2015, Avon began the Beauty for a Purpose brand campaign. In 2016, Avon and the Avon Foundation for Women reached the $1 billion mark in contributions to women's causes. In 2016, Avon will also celebrate its 130th anniversary.
