His first product was the Little Dot Perfume Set, which featured five single note fragrances -- lily of the valley, white rose, hyacinth, violet, and heliotrope. Then, in 1896, he created the first sales brochure. The Avon focus on empowering women and creating a friendly, family-like business environment began with forward-thinking McConnell. The Avon name and logo were first introduced in 1929, and in 1939, the company officially changed its name to Avon. Avon became a public company in 1946, but was never listed on the New York Stock Exchange until 1964. Avon added jewelry to its product line in 1971, and by 1975, the company had become the world's largest jewelry manufacturer. In 1986, Avon became the first company to use stabilized retinol in its skin care products. The number of Avon sales reps reached one million in 1978 with over $2 billion in sales, and by 2009, Avon had more than six million sales reps.
The Avon foundation was founded in 1955, and its first grant was a single $400 scholarship. In 1992, Avon U.K. launched the Breast Cancer Crusade and began selling a Crusade pin to raise awareness about breast cancer and to raise funds for research. Avon in the U.S. adopted the Crusade in 1993, and in 1998, Avon held its first Walk to raise funds for breast cancer. Since 2003, the 220,000 participants in The Walk to End Breast Cancer have raised nearly $590 million. In 2004, Avon introduced the Speak Out Against Domestic Violence Campaign.
