All across the Midwest, Shopko provides a shopping experience that will get customers everything they need without making them run all over town. Much like Target, it is a homegrown retail chain coming right from the heartland, and much like Wal-Mart, it offers great deals for savvy shoppers of all types. With a slogan like "Shopko: The Store for You," you know you'll always be at home in the aisles.
Shopko's origins date all the way back to 1961, starting with an idea from a Chicago pharmacist named James Ruben. Ruben wanted to create a retail store that offered its customers health care as well, which would be especially helpful for citizens in rural areas and small towns. He started small by opening a store in Green Bay, Wisconsin in 1962. His dreams of in-store healthcare were slowly realized throughout the 1970's with in-store pharmacies called Shopko Express opening up in 1971 and vision centers in 1978. In 1971, Shopko merged with the Minneapolis retail company SuperValu. This merger ended with Shopko buying back independence in 1997.
In the next several decades, Shopko's popularity and relevance continued to grow. Many of the stores were located conveniently in strip malls and shopping centers for easy shopper access. The 100th store opened in 1990, followed soon by the mail-order pharmacy ProVantage. In 1999, Shopko acquired the discount department store Pamida. These Pamida locations mainly turned into Shopko Hometown, a smaller Shopko store for low-populated towns. These stores have a much larger grocery section, making it an ideal stop for small-town families. Also in 1999, Shopko signed a contract with Payless ShoeSource, bringing fashionable and affordable footwear to the stores.
Shopko's distribution centers are located in Nebraska, Idaho, and Wisconsin, keeping the company inside the middle of America. While most locations remain within the Midwest, stores can reach as far as California and Washington. By the early 2000's, there were worries that Shopko's success would be threatened by the growing popularity of big-box stores like Wal-Mart. However, Shopko's accessible healthcare options in stores have kept them on top of competition throughout their many locations. They assist in these needs by operating the Shopko Foundation, which aims to improve the overall health of all surrounding citizens.
Online shopping for Shopko began in 2009. Their online selection includes all of the items people most often purchase online, ranging from women's clothing to appliances and books to baby gear. You can watch several YouTube videos from Shopko including Shopko Pharmacy TV spot 2.
