Like Macy's and Boston Store, Younkers has a long history. It began as a family-owned general store founded in Keokuk, Iowa in 1856 by Lipman, Samuel, and Marcus Younker, three Polish Jewish immigrant brothers. In 1874, the youngest brother, Herman, opened a dry goods store in Des Moines. When Samuel died in 1879, the brothers closed the store in Keokuk, and the Des Moines store became the main store. Before she became a fashion reporter, novelist, newspaper editor, and a contributor to Colliers, Ladies Home Journal, and the Saturday Evening Post, Eleanor Hoyt Brainerd worked as a clerk in the Des Moines store in 1889. Three of her novels, "For the Love of Mary Ellen" (1915), "How Could You Jean?" (1918), and "Pegeen"(1920), were made into silent movies. "How Could You Jean?" starred Mary Pickford.
In 1899, the brothers moved the Des Moines store to 7th and Walnut Street, where it remained for 106 years until it closed on August 12, 2005. The brothers installed Iowa's first escalator, or "electric stairs" as they were called at the time, in the store in 1939. The store was also known for its tearoom which opened in 1913 and which continued to operate until shortly before the store itself closed. The building it occupied was vacated when the store closed, and then, in the early morning hours of March 29, 2014, it was destroyed in a fire as a builder was planning to renovate the building into apartment space. With half of the building a total loss, that project was scaled back, but as shown in Parts of Younkers Building live on at other locations, some were able to purchase parts of the furnishings and roofing materials from the developer at the beginning of his renovation", before the fire.
