Zumba's a very popular dance based exercise program. Similar to Jazzercise and Body Training Systems (BTS), Zumba aims to help people develop a healthy body, primarily through aerobic exercise. All three exercise programs offer classes for various levels of fitness and intensity. That's where the similarities end. Zumba's in a class of its own. Founded in the United States in 2005, and introduced worldwide in 2007, Zumba now has 14 million participants.
The basic premise Zumba follows and that appeals to so many people is exercise can be enjoyable. One of Zumba’s stated goals is to “take the work out of workouts.” By combining simple choreographed dance steps to rhythm-based Latin music, Zumba achieves that goal. Participants get so caught up in the movements and the music that the workout is not the focus of the activity.
One of the things that sets Zumba apart from other like programs is that Zumba instructors, who are licensed and must re-qualify for that license annually, are considered independent contractors. That means, once they take the classes and are licensed, they can hold Zumba classes at the venue of their choice and charge what they want to charge. There are no franchise fees or payments to the home office. Instructors are eligible for discounts on programs, can receive new choreography and music, have a support group and can purchase wholesale clothing to resell. This makes becoming an instructor as lucrative as you want it to be.
Another positive for Zumba is that they offer classes for everyone. There are lower intensity classes for older students that offer the aerobic and toning workouts, but they also include balance and coordination work. They offer super intense workout classes, water workouts and toning workouts. There are three different age group focused classes for children. The stated age range for the various classes for kids is 0 to 11 years old. Overall, Zumba fitness has something for every age group and sex. Zumba appeals to all age groups and fitness levels.
If you aren't a joiner or have a hectic schedule, you can purchase various classes on DVD directly from the website. This allows you to take the classes in the privacy of your own home and at your own speed. You could purchase DVDs of some of your more problematic routines to perfect at home, before returning to class. Buying the DVDs also allows you to share the fun with your family and friends. From all reports, the sense of community that Zumba-ing creates is part of the fun.
Fun is the focus, as well as fitness. The successful formula that Zumba follows is basic interval training. Interval training is an established fitness protocol that combines intense activity with periods of relative rest. This is a proven way to increase overall fitness levels. In the case of Zumba, high repetition and intense dance movements are combined with slower less intense movements. These moves are done to enjoyable music and in an atmosphere of fun. You can get fit and stay that way, while having a good time. It’s a formula that is working, worldwide. Dance, Dance, Dance Music Video - Zumba Fitness
