Similar to Foot Locker or Running Warehouse, Finish Line is a chain of stores with an active online presence that specializes in offering great prices on running and athletic shoes. Founded in the early 1980s, the original owners were three good friends who initially purchased a franchise in The Athlete's Foot brand. After opening 10 stores in Indiana, they wanted to move outside of the state but learned that their franchise agreement forbid them from operating outside of their current state. They worked with several investors to create a new chain of shoe stores that would directly compete with that brand and opened the first Finish Line in Speedway, Indiana shortly after.
Less than 10 years after opening, Finish Line owned more than 100 stores. Though many of those stores were in Ohio, Indiana and other states in the Midwest, the company now operates stores in a number of cities and states across the country.
Finish Line quickly developed a name for itself and a strong reputation among shoppers because of its so-called shoe wall, a feature still found in all its stores today. Similar shoe stores placed shoes on racks and tables, which made it hard for shoppers to see all their available options. The Finish Line shoe wall runs from the floor to the ceiling and along an entire wall, which lets shoppers see all the different types of shoes available in the store.
Since launching its official website, Finish Line profits increased significantly. Though the website lacks a shoe wall, it does allow shoppers to select shoes relating to specific sports and activities, including hiking, walking, jogging, basketball and baseball. Shoppers can also browse the site according to the manufacturers they like the best.
The website also features a number of clothing and apparel options that are not available in stores. When you visit the website, you can find clothing relating to college and professional teams from across the country, including hooded sweatshirts and tee shirts. Many of its stores focus primarily on athletic shoes and do not feature many apparel options because less than 20% of the products its stores sell relate to apparel. It still makes the majority of its income off the shoes it offers. Smaller stores also have limited space available to sell apparel from teams outside the region, but you can find apparel for most teams on the Finish Line website.
A number of major athletes were or are spokespersons for shoe manufacturers, and Finish Line wants to remind you of the associations between athletes and shoes with commercials posted online. The JJ Watt Reebok Pump commercial recreates the excitement fans had when Reebok released its first Pump athletic shoe but for a new generation.
Finish Line has always focused on providing shoppers with the best options from the top brands. You will now find a wide range of shoes available from major companies like Reebok, Adidas, Nike and New Balance, but you can also find shoes from lesser known manufacturers on the website. This provides you with more options than you might find in your neighborhood store. You'll also find a greater selection of shoe sizes. The Finish Line website offers shoes in every size the manufacturer produces, making it easy for shoppers to get everything they need.
